Many leaders acquire authority through ambition and manipulation. Iโ€™m not referring to them. But a test of leadership for those who acquire authority organically, with the will of those being led, is to maintain the zeal and principles which put you into that position, after you encounter the machinery designed to exhaust, exasperate, deter, and demoralize.
I wonder, is life best lived like a job? I.e set goals for yourself and then work to achieve them? Today I realised how passively I have been living mine so far, but maybe that's ok? I don't want a second job.

Judgement, taste and quality were always precious skills. In the world of #AInotesfollow, I have become more aware of the fact that it is often hard to put in words why something is good, great or amazing - or just looks good, but is average. A lot of the professional content I see feels like most Netflix series. They have all the elements - but the overall experience is still meh. Quality is still hard to achieve.

Thatโ€™s also the point isnโ€™t it? The people who like this place doesnโ€™t like it too busy. So for them (us?) it will be a nice place to hang out as long as it stay uncommercial and low-key. But to be prosperous and interesting to the creator, it need to grow. ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

I still don't get how now after AI coding there's people saying that contrary to common belief code wasn't a bottleneck and I realized that when I was starting to code at 10yrs ago when I was 15 and read it in a stackoverflow comment. I thought that was the common belief and still can't believe a lot of supposed senior programmers apparently believed so.

Yes, code was never the bottleneck and of course now it never will be either. Figuring out semantic modeling of data that makes sense across business domains and figuring out the right way to use digitalization to modernize processes, and the change cultures as become possible through such work - thatโ€™s much more bottlenecks! Code is easy; people and process is hard!

Anthropic is announcing the end of the world every few days. All this marketing disguised as news about an impeding danger of AI is tiresome.

not marketing. yes their jobs positively select for concern about ai, but most people that are actively researching the field are concerned about the current state of safety, pace and incentives. I dont agree with a lot anthropic does, but i do believe the employees take safety seriously and they obviously have a better understanding of it than us. also theres no incentive for someone like coxon to sound alarm bells on twitter for "marketing" reasons, after quitting anthropic
๐Ÿ˜Žprofilefollowreplied toprofilefollowresearcher, developer, dancer:
Yes, but some people say that they are pushing for market regulation. They want the state to protect them from the chinese models and, also, to protect the massive investments in Anthropic, OpenaAI, et al. that these companies will never be able to return. This sounds plausible to me too.

Maybe adjust the last part to โ€œmost Chairs that are worth a lotโ€ฆโ€ - because I guess there are chairs that are inexpensive but still good and thus could have cost a a lot?

my guess is the inexpensive chairs can be a good value for the price you pay but I doubt there are many of any chairs that are inexpensive and yet worth a lot
there's no fundamental physical limit that prevents silicon from developing taste and judgement, but language is a lossy compression of reality. taste comes from experience, from the shadowy mass of episodic memory, which swirls and convects at the boundary of consciousness. the ideas recombine into new ones in the nuclear reactor of the hippocampus. but no matter how imbued with meaning and expertise is a handmade wardrobe we still get our shit from ikea
