There are days when I wonder if I shouldn't write in Catalan here, so that there is more visible linguistic diversity. After all, translations are cheap these days. Machine translation can help preserve the world's linguistic diversity.

What is the exact definition of an IDE? JetBrain's products are as good as ever, in my opinion, but people have definitely made non-IDEs into big, hulking behemoths with tons of plugins. If anything, maybe "just an editor" is dead?
I think they mean the transition that all IDE's are making towards an agentic interface, hiding the code completely as humans will not have to interact with it since the AI will be doing a better job at everything, even auditing it.

I find myself building bespoke tooling for my own #swdevnotesfollow and #ainotesfollow workflows these days, not only because of the obvious reason of software being so much cheaper to build, but also because there are SO MANY options for solving any given problem that it feels impossible to evaluate all of them. If it's not a crucial piece of tech for a work problem then it often feels like paving my own way is both cheaper mentally (kind of amazing that's true these days) and probably a better fit.
..then of course I have to contend with - "Is this going to be a maintenance nightmare in the future?" and then I still usually conclude "no, the maintenance will be aided by the same approach that the construction was". It's interesting how dramatically and quickly the scales have changed in this equation - and for such a wide range of software.
For example, I am looking for a coding agent coordinator with a particular (but not all that insane) set of requirements. I used both Claude and Perplexity to show me options and break them down by fit against my requirements. I got completely different lists! No overlap! And no perfect fits.

being a student is great but the tasks are really quite boring. ive worked in academia now a little bit and its genuinely much more fun to work on something real, read papers, do experiments and write. I still don't get how now after AI coding there's people saying that contrary to common belief code wasn't a bottleneck and I realized that when I was starting to code at 10yrs ago when I was 15 and read it in a stackoverflow comment. I thought that was the common belief and still can't believe a lot of supposed senior programmers apparently believed so.

Yes, code was never the bottleneck and of course now it never will be either. Figuring out semantic modeling of data that makes sense across business domains and figuring out the right way to use digitalization to modernize processes, and the change cultures as become possible through such work - thatโ€™s much more bottlenecks! Code is easy; people and process is hard!

Iโ€™m not supposed to take that literally of course, but I donโ€™t think software has such an important role in our lives, for most of us. Water, food, air. Those you canโ€™t live without. When it comes to software, I spend most of my workdays in the shell (vim, git, grep,โ€ฆ) and if $place allows in mutt+weechat (although thatโ€™s mostly outlook and teams). Nothing particularly new!
